Court speed
The First Two Steps Win the Rally
Watch the best defender in any club gym. She seems to know where the ball is going.
Most people think that’s reflexes. Watch closer, and it’s something more learnable.
The read is half the sprint
By the time the ball leaves a hitter’s hand, it’s often too late to start moving. The athletes who look fastest started earlier — they read the approach, the shoulder, the set’s shape.
That read buys a tenth of a second. On a nine-meter court, a tenth of a second is the difference between a dig and a point for the other team.
The push is the other half
After the read comes the first step. Not the tenth step — there is no tenth step in volleyball.
A powerful first step is mostly strength, pointed in the right direction. Legs that can push hard, ankles and hips that hold the angle, and mechanics that don’t waste the push standing up.
The framework: read early, push hard, stop strong. Every court-speed drill worth doing trains one of those three.
What parents can watch for
Don’t time the sprint. Watch the start.
Does your athlete move on the hitter’s shoulder, or on the ball? Does the first step go where she’s going, or up into the air first? Can she stop without stumbling and go again?
Those are the trainable pieces of court speed, and they respond to the same engine work that builds the jump. The read comes with reps. The push comes with strength.
Both show up in numbers we can measure — here’s how we do it on Evaluation Day.
This article supports our deeper guide: Court speed.
Ask about your athleteQuestions parents ask
My athlete is fast in P.E. but late on the court. Why?
Straight-line speed and court speed are different skills. Court speed is a read plus an explosive first step from a dead stop or a shuffle — and it has to be trained in those positions, not on a track.
What should court-speed training actually look like?
Strength work for the push, short-distance starts in game stances, deceleration practice, and reps that pair movement with a visual cue to read. If a session is all cones and no reading, it is only training half the skill.
